Empowering Dreams: April Pursues her Career with the Support of Skills for Chicagoland’s Future

April was a hardworking Chicagoan who was committed to finding a role that she could feel passionate about and that would allow her to continue building her career. She was looking for a change in industries and to take on a new challenge. April was also a caretaker for her mother and had developed a skillset that she hoped would enable her to transition easily into the healthcare industry.

During her job search, April saw an online posting on our website about a Pharmacy Technician position with University of Chicago Medicine and decided to apply. She was excited for a new opportunity and was pleased to learn that this job opportunity entailed a training program in which Skills would help guide her.

After applying, April was pleased at how our team supported her throughout the hiring process and she was thankful for the mentoring she received. April ended up getting hired by University of Chicago Medicine and works as a Pharmacy Technician. She loves the work she does and has continued to put her skills to good use! We were able to speak to April about her experience working with our staff and the hiring process.

What brought you to Skills?

I was looking for jobs, ran across Skills and thought it was worth applying. I ended up applying online for some positions that were posted on the Skills website.

How was your experience working with Skills staff?

I was impressed with how Yesenia handled everything as far as going over the interviews, preparing us, and helping us along the way. It was really nice.

Bring me back to the moment when you were hired. How did it feel?

I was excited when I got hired because I never really thought I would get picked. I was out of work for a while - three and a half years.

How are you liking your new job so far? How has the employer and Skills helped you grow?

I like the job. Being at the hospital - it’s busy but it makes my days go quicker. I’m enjoying it. My career goal is to be a Pharmacy Technician, whether at the hospital or somewhere else, so this job is helping me reach that goal.

What opportunities has this job provided for you?

It’s helped me grow a lot. And every step of the way, Skills was there. Yesenia mentored us along the way, up until we got hired.

Would you recommend Skills to other job seekers?

Yes, I would recommend Skills because they will stay with you during the entire process. Getting a job with Skills was quick. I was surprised how fast everything moved. I heard from them in December and by January I was in the program.
